Assigning the Correct Rating

Once VA grants service connection of a disability, the next step is to assign the percentage rating.  Under rating a claim is perhaps the most common VA error we see.  It is also one that veterans often fail to appeal.  This is understandable as just getting VA to concede service connection can be a years long and difficult fight.  But after that initial win, veterans should always verify that VA has properly rated their claims.

In this section we’ll discuss how VA assigns percentage ratings to disabilities.  Those percentages are assigned according to the veteran’s symptoms.  VA has charts that list symptoms and their respective percentages.  You can read more about those charts here.

It is vitally important that veterans receive the rating that matches their symptoms.  Even a 10 or 20% difference can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost benefits over a veteran’s lifetime.
